Keeping Members Safe

A Message from YMCA CEO: Matt Whitehead (May 12, 2020)

YMCA Members,

These are certainly unprecedented times. What we originally thought would be a two week shutdown, is now approaching a two month closure. We understand your desire to get back to your normal routine. One that includes your daily exercise here at the Decatur Family YMCA. We too are ready to reopen our doors, see our members and resume business as usual. However, like most businesses, we are coming to terms with what will be a new normal.

Our hope is that we can reopen sometime in the near future. In the meantime, our leadership team has been working extensively to come up with a reopening plan. One that will help keep you and the Y staff safe. As we continue to work on this plan, please know that there will be future communications that will explain what to expect when we are finally able to reopen. There will be changes that ensure we are practicing social distancing, proper cleaning, and limiting the amount of physical contact to keep you and others safe.

All of us are grateful for the outpouring of support many of you have expressed. We are committed to doing everything possible to secure the future of the Y, and its services, in these uncertain times. We are also committed to finding way to continue to serve our community during this time. We have been providing emergency child care for healthcare workers, first responders and other essential workers and have hosted two blood drives to help ensure there is not a blood shortage in our community. We are also providing classes online that you can watch live or at your convenience, so you are able to stay active while at home.

All of this would not be possible if it were not for the continued support from our donors and members. So we thank you for staying with us. We understand that this has had a severe financial impact for many in our community – however, if you have not done so already and in a position to help – we hope you will consider continuing your monthly membership or make a donation to the Y fund to support our efforts in the community during this challenging time.

I hope you all are well and staying safe. We hope to see you soon!
