Are you ready to take on a leadership role at the pool and learn life-saving skills that make a real difference? The Decatur Family YMCA offers American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, preparing individuals to become certified lifeguards through one of the nation’s most trusted safety training organizations.
We proudly train 100% of Macon County’s American Red Cross Certified Lifeguards, and we are committed to upholding the highest standards in safety and preparedness.
About the Course
Our Lifeguard Training program includes:
- Full Lifeguard Certification through the American Red Cross
- CPR and First Aid & Oxygen certification
- Real-world rescue skills and emergency response training
- A two-year certification upon successful completion
Course Fee: $305 per participant
Certification is valid for 2 years.
Prerequisite Skills Test
To begin the course, all participants must pass a required swim skills assessment:
- 150-yard continuous swim
- 2-minute brick dive and swim (retrieve a 10-lb brick and swim 20 yards)
- 3-minute water tread without using hands
Note: Individuals who do not pass the prerequisite test will not be able to continue in the training course or receive certification. Be sure to come prepared and confident in your swimming ability.

Interested in working as a lifeguard at Decatur Family YMCA? We will cover the full cost of your training if you are hired before completing the course. In return, we request a minimum one-year commitment to employment following your certification.
